Flammability tests for electrical applications

Back

When using electrical appliances and equipment, the possibility of damage, which is often associated with the development of heat or sparks, can never be completely ruled out.

Various organizations, such as the VDE or UL, have developed different test methods for assessing the fire risk of individual plastics.

The glow wire test in accordance with DIN EN 60695-2-10 ff. simulates the danger posed by heating electrical conductors.

The following are tested:

  • GWEPT - Flammability of finished products (DIN EN 60695-2-11)
  • GWFI - Flammability of materials (DIN EN 60695-2-12)
  • GWIT - Flammability of materials (DIN EN 60695-2-13)
  • GWT - general requirements for electrical appliances

When using electrical appliances and equipment, damage can be caused by the conductive effect of salty water on plastic surfaces.

The CTI or PTI value provides information on the risk of leakage currents forming under the influence of a dripped electrolyte.

One requirement for plastic components for electrical applications is sufficient heat resistance.

The test is carried out using a special test apparatus in accordance with DIN EN 60695-10-2. The specifications are contained in DIN EN 60335-1 on the safety of electrical appliances for household use, among others.

The UL 94 standard is used to classify the flammability of plastics under identical conditions.

OMPG has the equipment and experience to test materials according to the following standards:

  • UL94-V (vertical)
  • UL94-HB (horizontal)
  • UL94-HBF (for foams)
  • UL94- VTM (for foils 250 - 25µm)

Injection molding of UL rods (125mm x 13mm) is possible in the wall thicknesses: 0.8; 1.2; 1.6 and 3.0 mm.
