Viscosity measurements and degradation

Back

The flow behavior of plastics is determined by their viscosity. A distinction is made between melt viscosities (MVR / MFR) and solution viscosities, often expressed in viscosity numbers (VZ, IV or VN). Both measurements depend on the chain lengths of the polymers and the test conditions.

Injection molding processing or heat stress during use can lead to a shortening of the polymer chains. Viscosity measurements are used to determine polymer degradation during processing or ageing. Comparative measurements of material before processing (e.g. granulate) and component are always necessary.
For damage analyses, viscosity measurements are carried out on good and bad parts.

Spiral molds with different wall thicknesses are available at OMPG for investigating the dependencies of the flow path in injection molding on different additives.
